The Cinderella Projct 2010

I was so honoured to have been a part of the Cinderella Project this year as a Fashion Stylist for some of the prom princess.  Clutch Jewels also donated a fleet of pretty jewels to the cause this year as in years before.  This special day is called Boutique Day.  We made fabulous…

These Grads are from the Greater Vancouver area and have been identified as extraordinary kids that have overcome some tough challenges in their lives and have managed to graduate from high school.  These kids deserve to have their own day in the sun especially on a day such as their prom so that is what we are doing here.  Making these worthy grads feel like Princesses and Princes to celebrate their prom just like any other grad in prom worthy style.

Everything is donated including everyone’s time and energy but the reward is so great for everyone that work on the project. As cliche as it sounds I had a very rewarding day and I walked away feeling invigorated and fabulous.  Good people making worthy grads fabulous and happy for prom! Congratulations to all the Grads of 2010 on behalf of myself and Clutch Jewels!!

Stay tuned for more fabulous Fashoinista Sista video adventures on Youtube or this blog.  More fun episodes to come!!

My Olympic Adventure 2010

Looking back it all seems to have come and gone so quickly, but I remember the slow build the last few years to the 2010 Olympics hosted by Vancouver & Whistler.  What FUN I had during the whole 3 weeks.  By the 3rd night I hat just gotten home from work and had an epiphany while sitting on the couch.  “Mary what are you doing? The Olympics will never be in my town again in my life time.  Get out there and have some fun!” and my friend.. I did.

Check out this vlog about my Olympic Adventure.  Its a little unsteady at times as I was just getting used to my camera and I might of had a drink or two in celebration, but overall its a pretty fun adventure complete with the Olympic Rings up in Whistler, 3 Street Parties, a Before & After photo of Granville Street, and 3 Young Medalists on the podium at the end. Yay! Who knows you might be in the crowds somewhere.. Enjoy the memories.. Mwah!

StyleMisters

This ones for the Gents. If you have a man in your life that’s in need of a little fashion intervention, tell him to check out this blog for just a sec cause it may help him to get inspired in the fashion realm.  I know its tough cause guys need “fashion” to first of all, take barely a minute to do, cause no one wants a guy that looks like he spends a ton of time in front of the mirror and quite frankly most guys just don’t feel inclined that way anyways. We like a guy that’s a guy, but the truth is that its ok to get fresh these days in Mens Fashion.

I’m stoked to show these kool kats off in this blog. I’ve got a whole bunch of friends that are what I would call Seriously Stylin Gentlemen without even trying. Guys that just somehow look handsome no matter what they’re doing. Check out some of these sexy looking fellers.

Style Misters

Cool black layers with pops of white. Roll up your cuffs and show your tats. = Rad

Bowler Hat and Pea Coat. Ya.

Formal Friday Attire – I digs

Geek Chic Holland Style.

Sexy Chill Styler

Ghetto Fabulous

Pepe Fresh – The Yellow Tie is Killer.

If I was a guy I would rock it out too. Boring doesn’t have to happen anymore cause Men’s Fashion has picked up its game in a serious way. There’s so many more options, detailing, cuts, and layering that can happen just take some notes from these guys. Find a signature accessory if nothing else and run with it for a while. It will inspire another and suddenly you’ll have your own cool personal style start to emerge and it will only get better and more put together with time. If you take just a minute or two to shop for your ‘wardrobe’ you won’t have to think hard when you want to go out, it’ll just be there sitting on your dresser and your good to go. Of course it has to look like you didn’t think about it.. but you did. Everyone does, don’t be fooled.

Pick up a scarf, or a cuff, try a hat or a new colour of sneaker that you haven’t tried before and remember to wear it when you go out on the town! Girls love this kind of stuff on guys!! Its in the details. Seriously. Now you know. Think layers, playing with prints, ties, hats and contrasting something in your outfit for a more graphic and modern approach.  Go and Get Fresh already!

30 Day Fashionista – Jan 2010

The 3rd installment of the 30 Day Fashionista is finally here!!

The 30 Day Fashionista project is my lil’ fashion experiment and social commentary on Style.  I love the essence of Style because that to me is one of the things that makes humans so fascinating.  For instance I don’t laugh when I see someone in a crazy outfit walking down the street.  I mean… if its deserving, ya sure, a quiet giggle can slip out, but I would rather an expression shown through personal style rather than blah.  I love colourful personalities of all sorts.  Its the spice of life if you ask me. You may not be askin, but I’m telling honey… ; )

As far as this project goes, its pretty cool watching how my style transitions from month to month and to see how many times I can remix old clothes with new and still keep it all fresh.  Lets face it anyone that’s seen the movie Clueless and recalls the scene where Cher is looking at her “computer closet” where the outfits mix and match themselves has always wanted that for themselves.  I’m a daily fabulista and I still need a reminder once in awhile on how I threw together an outfit previously cause I always seem to mix it up different.  It can be hard to keep track but in essence that’s the beauty of fashion in that its ever evolving constantly reinventing and moving forward.  Grabbing from the past for sure but always marching on.

There are many new fav pieces in the mix this time… My newest fav is my Vintage ‘of the moment’ checkered puff sleeve button up shirt designed by Cheryl Tiegs. Um ya Cheryl Tiegs was a model and Charlie’s Angel!!!  So cool.  I love this shirt and found it on a Vintage shop recently.  I surely scored that day.  At least 3 items of clothes I got that day are in the mix here.

Just a few fab ideas for remixing your wardrobe.  I do things my way but my way is in its own right pretty fabulous in a down to earth casual glam kind of way.  Maybe not High End Designer Fabulous but I rock to my own fab.  Check out my New Years Dress at the end to see what I’m talking about.  Fun!

Its a fashion throw down Mary Style..

Big love in the New Year!!

30 Day Fashionista – Summer 09

This is my second attempt at this fab fashion experiment that I call the 30 Day Fashionista! I’ve photographed over 30 days worth of rockin’ outfits to give a sense of what my daily personal style was this summer (which just ended a couple weeks ago as far as the sunny warm weather was concerned!!)

Through this series of photos I am documenting what it is to be a true Fashionista Sista while staying true to what my lifestyle is up here in Vancouver as the face of Clutch Jewels, Fashion Stylist, Momma, with a very active social and family life, while rocking a chill, but always glam some how fashion flavour.  I’m a down sister that truly lives and breathes life, but I am a realist and I am a firm believer in “dressing for the event.” I always like being pulled together, with high comfort in mind while looking great no matter what I am up to.

While keeping in mind the recession I made sure to remix a few pieces from my wardrobe in more than a few outfits to show that good fashion comes from ingenuity and a fresh fashion attitude.  Remix, layer and innovate.

I had to document my outfits throughout the summer so that it was real time, so know this.. already my style has evolved yet again and its on for the Fall/Winter installment of the 30 Day Fashionista so stay tuned friend cause I’ve only just started this project!!!

The thing about summer is that there isn’t much layering going on so there’s not a ton of depth to summer attire in general.  Its all about the details jewellery, shoes, bags etc which are harder to see in these pics shot from so far back.  Not to worry I am working on making some close ups happen so you can see the magic in the details.  Coming soon!!

Live a little and be fabulous everyday. My fav pieces this season are my denim vest (LOVE!), my grey skinny jeans, my purple knee length skirt, thick black waist belt, my leopard strapless top and of course all my fav Clutch Jewels that are harder to see, but are always present and finish every outfit.

Its a fashion throw down Mary Style..

Be Fabulous! Wear Clutch Jewels!

Much love.

Mary.

30 Day Fashionista (Jan-Mar 2009)

This is my first attempt at this fun & fabulous fashion experiment that i call the 30 Day Fashionista!  I’ve photographed 30 days worth of rockin’ outfits to give a sense of what my daily personal style is and to document what it is to be a true fashionista sista while constantly keepin things fashionably fresh and ‘livin the talk’.

This is just 3 months worth of pics, so know this.. already my style has evolved yet again and its on for the summer installment of the 30 Day Fashionista so stay tuned!!!

Live a little and be Fabulous everyday.  You don’t have to wear labels to have a slammin outfit, you simply have to put a bit of time into composing some solid outfits that you can count on (fit is essential!) using some of your best character pieces and wear them!!  Don’t be lazy.  You put clothes on everyday anyways you may as well have fun with it.

I’m a mom to a 2 year old and I fell into a teeny rut, but I climbed back out onto the Fabulous scene with a bit of effort and let me tell you, its so much more fun to be Fabulous!  Heck I’ve never said the word Fabulous so much as I have this year.  I’m happy to be one with Fab even if its my own version of what Fabulous is.  I’m making Fabulous everyday just because its so much fun.

Be Fabulous!  Wear Clutch Jewels!

Get Green Already!!!

Its Earth Day today so I felt compelled to write more about our beautiful but incredibly hurting planet.  Its probably the most talked about topic on the planet at the moment or we can at least hope everyone is tuned into this one.

Every Eco System is strained and will be for generations unless we take action everyday.  The time is now to make ‘greener’ changes in our lives because we are truly living amongst an Ecological crisis.

The Eleventh Hour Documentary (2007) – Leonardo DiCaprio was my inspiration this time.  I’ve been tuned into my ‘green’ since I was a young teen. When I was 19 years old on a road trip in Montreal, I was the girl that ran down the street after a black garbage bag that was blowing in the wind to grab it and put it in the garbage can.  My friends all laughed at me, but I didn’t care cause I was doing something to make a difference in any way I could… right in front of my eyes.

All it takes is being aware of your immediate surroundings to see that the earth is hurting and that the main reason it’s hurting is because of our mass consumption every single day.  Critical Mass and the constant barrag of gas, plastic & general crap that makes garbage & pollution.

Its not about stopping all forms of shopping, but more about cutting down how much shopping we do on a weekly basis.  Buy smart.  Buy local.  Buy less often from mass manufactured companies and stop shopping from unethical companies!!  This means from companies that are sweat shop free but also companies that package their goods in non-biodegradable plastic or have harmful chemicals in their products.

Remember this if nothing else and chant it to yourself as much as possible. “The more things you have the more time you have to spend working.”  Slow down and breathe already.  The flowers do smell marvelous.  For real.

We have to build a new ‘green’ economy that is centered around healthy fuels, green options, and making it easier for the average human to shop and buy ‘greener’ things.  Everyday you vote by paying for everything that you buy.  It says yes I approve of this product and the way it is made, what it is made out of and what it does.  That is one of the most powerful votes you have.  Make the right choices and think about that bottle of water that you bought yet again and where that plastic is going once your done with it.  Recycling isn’t solely the answer it’s a small part of the solution.  Reduce.

The government needs to be a bigger part in the ‘green’ movement for the masses and should lower income taxes in my opinion and increase fossil fuel taxes.  This way we’re not having to pay more, but instead it will even out financially and become easier over time to decrease our addiction to harmful fossil fuels.  The sun has enough energy alone to power every building, power plant, business and home if captured by solar power.  We’ve almost exhausted so many resources already, but the sun keeps shining on all of us so…  Im just saying.. Think about it.

Bailouts aren’t the answer if that business that receives it is doing biz the old fashionioned way.  In my opinion its Gods way of saying “what you were doing is not right so fix it or you won’t have a biz.”  We need a wise use of our planets resources, because we don’t have 20-30 years.  We have to make the changes now!!

On the bright side what a great time to be alive because this generation gets to be the ones that completely redefine and change the way we have been doing things for century’s. This generation is the one to make the changes really happen, because most of us are ready to make the leap to the ‘greener’ side.

Some more suggestions in how to live a greener life everyday:

1.     Walk – So obvious, but always so worth saying.

2.     Ride your bike.  Work out for you and Green to!!!

3.     Move closer to where you work or vice versa.

4.     Pick up a piece of litter a day.  You know that piece of garbage that you stepped over to walk past.. go back, pick it up and throw it in the next garbage you see.  Do this everyday or at least regularly.

5.     Stop buying anything plastic that you possibly can, most importantly things that are “one use wonders” like plastic drink containers or non recyclable plastics.

6.     Write diaper companies like Huggies and Pampers and demand that they come up with a biodegradable diaper!!!  Shame on you Huggies and Pampers!  You are leaders in your field and you are a joke.  You look as selfish as you possibly can through your neglect in this area.  Make it easier for all the families out there that simply have to buy into your brand because there are no other options for them.  Get a conscience.

7.     Fill up your tires on your car so you get the best performance on gas.

8.     Stop smoking already!  3 strikes butt out!!  It harms you, it harms everyone else and its terrible for the environment.  Plus you probably litter butts everywhere every single day.  The tobacco companies call you a sucker and straight up… so do I.

9.      Buy from local Designers, Artisans, and Farms.  Keep the money local on so many levels.

10.   Shut off the taps faster and recognize the precious gift every drop of “Blue Gold” is.  Do you know that above all water is the most precious resource of all?  Without it we are a desert and nothing grows there.  Think.

11.   Stop being the devil’s advocate by telling your friends and the people you chat with on a daily basis that Global Warming isn’t true or whatever rubbish you may have heard second hand.  If you can’t tell that the earth is hurting badly and in deadly serious shape than you are part of the problem so zip it man and do something ‘green’ to counteract what you’ve done.  Going green certainly can’t hurt so do it already!

12.   Reduce, reuse, recycle.  Reduce is the first so stop buying so much plastic in fact cut it out ruthlessly.  There are other options most of the time!  Once it’s broken it goes in a landfill.  Set up a recycling program in your office or somewhere that needs one. The fact that some people still don’t recycle is unfathomable.  Make it happen today!

The Ennead WebTV Series #1 on YouTube!

Eeeeeek!!  So I must tell you how stoked I am for my husbands newest WebTV Show project called The Ennead because it is the shiz!!  So much so that You Tube has asked to partner with them for some serious promo to show it to the world..

The first episode has a bit of a nod to the hit show Lost, but after that it takes you on a completely different journey.  You have no idea how clever this story is.  It has a ton of layers and if you have hacker tendancies, think conspiracy theories, like the Matrix, alternate realities and/or Alice in Wonderland I think your going to dig it my dear.  So check it out and support some cool cats just trying to show you the cool world that Terry has crafted.

I am so proud of this team especially my man Tyler and of course Terry.  Amazing job you guys.  All it takes is a dream to start..  Just watch it and see for yourself.  Much love.

The Ennead is an original episodic web series by Terry Miles.  They’re shooting for 26 episodes, but they might end up at around 22-24…

NEW EPISODES EVERY THURSDAY AT 9:00PM (PST)
Next episode airs Thursday, April 23rd at 9:00PM (PST)

THE ENNEAD

For centuries, behind the scenes, two sides have been fighting a war. In the quest for any advantage, both sides are searching for The Eternals, Nine of them are known as The Ennead. The Eternals have helped shape the destiny of the world from the beginning of time, but centuries ago they vanished.

Five apparent strangers wake up in the woods, strange items in the their pockets, unsure of who, where, or when, they are.

As their memories slowly begin to return, they begin to suspect that everything is not quite what it seems, and that they might not be strangers after all.

Stop with the Horror Flick Ads already!

Here it is… a throw down.

I’m so tired of being bombarded by horror flick ads.  The first time I realized that I despised having to witness horror ads was when I was watching So You Think You Can Dance on Much Music in the afternoon with my little guy and sure enough suddenly Cut to commercial:

We’re looking at a woman standing in front of the mirror and suddenly the scariest and most horrifying face pops into the mirror reflection on screen and scared us both in a major way.  It was totally uncool having the Ad come on at 1pm in the afternoon, especially being sandwiched between fresh and inspired dancing on the show.  It was a crisp sunny day and suddenly my energy shifted uncomfortably and I had to fight to get my good vibes back.  Little kids don’t deserve to witness horror like that let alone adults!  Terrible TV scheduling. especially when its the daytime and the shows content is very audience friendly.  I wrote an email to the Much Music and they took note and made the change, as far as I now they stopped the Ads playing on the show before 6pm.  Props.

However, the next few times I really felt oppressed by these horror flick Ads was when this one Ad constantly kept playing while I was watching channel 6 during the Fashion Police for the SAG Awards this very evening!  Suddenly Cut to commercial:

Scary movie Ad for The Univited comes up and there’s horror everywhere.  Twisted bodies, scary eyes and dark content jumping at me.  This same commercial has been on for weeks and I despise it.  Everytime I see the beginning of the Ad I have to turn my head away before it cuts to something scary and horrifying that eventually comes up in one of my nightmares.

It’s a total injustice that we (the average cool sista and brotha out there and our innocent amazing children) are forced to endure those scary and dark images when we are least expecting it… let alone when we are expecting it.  In this crazy wild but beautiful world it seems to be a terrible idea to constantly force darkness onto people especially before 6pm on daytime television when all we’re trying to do is make something positive happen with our day!!  Spread the love yo and stop paying for the ugliness already.  The problem I see isn’t in watching these shows (even thought I must say ease off the horror train man) but its more importantly about these Ads being on TV so often and on the wrong content shows.  Everyone of us has to fight so much negativity in the world, why the heck are people buying into it all?  Smarten up.

This is your heads up TV Programming peoples.  Put your scary horror Ads online targeted websites or during the TV shows and Films that are more appropriate for the horror set.

Please take note.  This is the word From a down sista.. Peace.

My New Year’s Resolution 2009!

Straight up.  My resolution for 2009 is to be more… FABULOUS!!!

Oh ya, its on.  I’ve decided this year that I’m going to dress up more often and shine.  I invite you to do the same.  Being the fashionista that I am, I have more than a few party dresses, a sexy selection of heeled shoes and boots and other pretty things kicking around in the back of my closet waiting patiently for the day they get to rock it out with me.  The funny thing is that I haven’t worn as many of my special pieces in the last few years because I got pregnant, became a mom, worked continually hard on my business Clutch Jewels, and then suddenly before I knew it, I realized that I was surfing on this cloud of easy wearing knits, my signature pinstripe dark denim jeans and sneakers.

Sigh.  Sounds good.   But you know, I’ve reflected on this a lot in the last few months and I want to have more fun with it these days.  Fashion is the spice of life for me as with other things like my family and friends, traveling, boardsports and playing with my son Judah, but the bottom line is that

FASHION IS FUN.

I’m having a ton of fun rocking out fresh new outfits, and I’ve already been paid a whole bunch of great compliments since I started working my New Year’s resolution.  People smile at me more often and every time I look in the mirror I think ‘sweet, I look great.’  I’d say it’s a win win sitch.  So I urge you to step up this year and have fun when you’re putting your outfit together for the day.  Be sure to wear all those sexy shoes or high heeled boots that you have in your closet.  It doesn’t take a ton of money to have great style.  All it takes is keeping your eyes open for some special pieces that can be transformed a few different ways in amongst your wardrobe to keep it Happenin’.

So here are 6 solid fashion tips for you to remember as you get dressed this year to help you start looking more fabulous everyday.

  1. Explore the depths of your closet and make sure that you are wearing some of those cool pieces of clothing and accessories that have been in hiding and deserve to see the light.  Mix it up a little!
  1. If it doesn’t fit you or contour your curves properly DON’T wear it.
  1. Wear heels or cute shoes.
  1. Accessorize and Jewel thy self for heaven’s sake!  You must wear one signature accessory that pulls your whole outfit together be it a necklace, hat, scarf or earrings and oh ya.. that’s not including your purse or shoes.
  1. Try wearing a colourful thick or thin belt around some of your favorite tops, dresses, long sweaters or cardigans to cinch in your waist and add colour.
  1. Layer, Layer, LAYER!!!  There are many ways to layer.  Try button up shirts under T-shirts, long sleeves and tailored jackets.  Pop the collar and flip up the cuffs on the sleeves.  Until we start heading into the Spring season try a tank top as a base, layer something fun over top exposing some colour from of the tank top layer underneath and then throw on a stylish scarf and a cool jacket.  When in doubt try it on!

Putting a great wardrobe together takes time and love.  In fact it’s a constant work in progress, because clothes wear out and styles change as do sizes.  When you’re shopping keep your eyes open for that fresh new item that can be incorporated into your wardrobe multiple ways to keep you smiling, inspired and constantly feeling gorgeous.

I hope to see you round this year.  I’ll be the one wearing FABULOUS…  hope you are too!  Much love.
